Surgery Clinic

C. R. Jakobsoni 2a, Viljandi

The Surgery Clinic comprises the inpatient and outpatient surgery departments, as well as the intensive care unit and operating suite. The work of the Surgery Department includes the planned and emergency care of patients requiring general surgery, bariatric surgery, trauma and orthopedic surgery, urology, and ENT care.

The goal of the Surgery Clinic is to keep pace with global advancements in the field and to offer the best possible care within a general hospital. The team is increasingly adopting minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of various conditions. The advantages of this approach include less tissue trauma, reduced postoperative pain, a faster return to daily life, fewer wound infections, and improved cosmetic results.

The Surgery Department performs surgeries for both inpatients and day surgery patients, and also offers outpatient consultations with surgeons and orthopedists. At Viljandi Hospital, a surgeon and an anesthesiologist are on call around the clock.

The rooms are single or double occupancy, except for the observation rooms, which accommodate four patients.

The Surgery Department treats approximately 2,300 patients annually, of whom about 2,000 undergo surgery. There are 900 emergency patients, and 700 patients undergo surgery in the outpatient surgery program.

Most common inpatient surgeries:

  • Inguinal hernia repair
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Varicose vein removal
  • Appendectomy (emergency)

Most common surgeries in the outpatient surgery unit:

  • Arthroscopic knee meniscus surgery
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery

The Surgery and Intensive Care Department is equipped with modern facilities to perform a wide range of general surgical, trauma, orthopedic, urological, gynecological, and ENT surgeries. Approximately 2,000 surgeries are performed in the operating rooms each year.

The intensive care units treat both surgical patients and patients from other specialties who require Level II and III intensive care.
